Open Mic

We have a lot of poetry events coming up next week. In fact, there are seven full days of open mics and readings going on the upstate area starting on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13.

Sunday, May 13

2:00pm – Poetry + Prose
The Arts Center of The Capital Region, 265 River Street, Troy, NY
A monthly open mic for writers of poetry and prose on the 2nd Sunday of each month with your hosts Nancy Klepsch and Dan Wilcox.

 

Monday, May 14

7:30pm – Spring Street Reading Series
Spring Street Gallery, 110 Spring St., Saratoga Springs, NY
Spring Street Reading Series featuring Megan Mayhew Bergman. Seating limited to first 30; call 518-587-6433 for reservation. Co-sponsored by the Adirondack Center for Writing and the Spring Street Gallery.

8:00pm – Professor Java’s Wide Open Mic
Professor Java’s Coffee Sanctuary, 217 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12205
Open to all poets, comedians, musicians, spoken word artists in the area to come out and share their work to a very receptive audience in one of the most relaxed rooms in upstate New York. Stop by, have a coffee beverage and some dessert, and enjoy the show. This event, hosted by Kevin Peterson, is held on the second Monday of each month. Sign up starts at 7:15 with the open mic starting at 8:00PM.

Tuesday, May 15

7:00pm – Colonie Tuesday Night Live Poets’ Corner
Colonie Town Library, Maxwell Rd, Colonie, NY
Local poets and writers of all ages are invited to present six to ten minutes of their original work at this open reading forum. The public is encouraged to stop in and listen. Hosted by William Robert Foltin.

7:00pm – Emack and Bolio’s Open Mic Night
Emack & Bolio’s, Delaware Ave., Albany, NY
A weekly open mic for music and poetry

7:30pm – Nitty Gritty Slam #18
Valentine’s, 17 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY
Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series are bringing slam back to Albany with the NITTY GRITTY SLAM on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month. If you’re not into slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic before the slam. Sign up begins at 7PM, open mic starts at 7:30, and the slam starts at 8PM. Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID).

 

Wednesday, May 16

6:30pm – Finishing Line Press Reading
Pine Hollow Arboretum, 16 Maple Avenue Avenue, Slingerlands, NY
Jan Tramontano, Cecele Kraus, Linda Sonia Miller, Mimi Moriarty, and Frank Desiderio will read from their latest chapbooks published by Finishing Line Press. Join them for a great read and light refreshments at the Pine Hollow Arboretum.

Formerly the 3rd Thursday Reading, we have moved the weekday to the 3rd Wednesday and renamed to POETRY, BEACON. Please join us on the third Wednesday and bring your own or favorite poetry to share. $2 suggested donation.

8:00pm – Pauly’s Hotel Open Mic Night

Monthly poetry open mic with a featured poet hosted by Dan Wilcox. This month’s featured poet is Elizabeth Thomas. $3 suggested donation.

8:00pm – Starving Artist Thursdays
Hudson River Coffee House, 227 Quail Street, Albany, NY 12203
A weekly open Mic for music, poetry, and spoken word at one of Albany’s best new coffee shops.

 

Friday, May 18

9:00pm – Urban Guerilla Theatre
The Linda, 339 Central Ave., Albany, NY
Urban Guerilla Theatre is a Poetry/Spoken Word/Performance artists’ collective based in Albany, NY dedicated to reviving, redefining, and revolutionizing spoken word. The group employs various styles of poetry, music, spoken word and theatre to address life, love, relationships, social and societal issues. UGT also uses their open mic readings to host events and create an artistic space to house and develop artists and upcoming poets.

This month’s program, “Heartbreak Hotel: Good Morning Heartache” promises an outpouring of high-energy grief in the deeply intimate style that only UGT can deliver. Please join us for a night filled with all the emotion that life has to offer and performances you just won’t see anywhere else.

 

Saturday, May 19
