We have a lot of poetry events coming up next week. In fact, there are seven full days of open mics and readings going on the upstate area starting on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13.

8:00pm – Professor Java’s Wide Open Mic
Professor Java’s Coffee Sanctuary, 217 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12205
Open to all poets, comedians, musicians, spoken word artists in the area to come out and share their work to a very receptive audience in one of the most relaxed rooms in upstate New York. Stop by, have a coffee beverage and some dessert, and enjoy the show. This event, hosted by Kevin Peterson, is held on the second Monday of each month. Sign up starts at 7:15 with the open mic starting at 8:00PM.

Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series are bringing slam back to Albany with the NITTY GRITTY SLAM on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month. If you’re not into slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic before the slam. Sign up begins at 7PM, open mic starts at 7:30, and the slam starts at 8PM. Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID).

Urban Guerilla Theatre is a Poetry/Spoken Word/Performance artists’ collective based in Albany, NY dedicated to reviving, redefining, and revolutionizing spoken word. The group employs various styles of poetry, music, spoken word and theatre to address life, love, relationships, social and societal issues. UGT also uses their open mic readings to host events and create an artistic space to house and develop artists and upcoming poets.
This month’s program, “Heartbreak Hotel: Good Morning Heartache” promises an outpouring of high-energy grief in the deeply intimate style that only UGT can deliver. Please join us for a night filled with all the emotion that life has to offer and performances you just won’t see anywhere else.
