From The Page to Stage 1

Page To Stage

Albany Poets has been very fortunate to work with the Albany Barn and Brighter Choice Charter Middle School for Girls to help guide students through the process of writing, editing, memorizing, and then performing their own poetry over the past five weeks. On Friday, February 15, at Stage 1 (46 North Swan St., Albany), the students will be sharing their hard work with friends, family, school staff, and the public for the very first time.

We are looking for local, community poets to share the stage with the students and perform at this show. If you are interested, please email albanypoets@gmail.com.

Albany Barn has partnered with Albany Poets, and Brighter Choice Middle School, to offer the second year of, “From the Page to the Stage,” a poetry and spoken word writing workshop for teens and young adults in January 2013. The workshop will conclude with an evening of performances on February 15th.

“From the Page to the Stage” was held throughout the month of January with a group of students from Brighter Choice Middle School for Girls. A performance of the work created during this workshop will take place at Stage 1, Albany Barn’s headquarters and community art space located at 46 North Swan Street in Albany. Established local poets Kevin Peterson and Thom Francis led participants through the process of writing, editing, and performing poetry. The event will begin at 6pm, with student performances starting at 6:30pm, accompanied by performances from current members of Albany Poets. Refreshments will be served.

About the Poets:

Kevin Peterson is an Albany native and has been writing poetry since the age of 13. His work is observational and people-centric, ingrained with an unfaltering sense of humor. He thoroughly enjoys the performative aspects of poetry, is a regular competitor/performer at the Nitty Gritty Slam, and member of the 2012 slam team selected to compete at the National Poetry Slam.  Kevin volunteers for the Albany Barn and is a board member of Albany Poets, both instructing and hosting the first ever Page Meets Stage performance in 2012. He also loves writing brief bios about himself in third person.

Thom Francis is the president of Albany Poets and has been organizing, promoting, and hosting open mics and poetry / spoken word events in Albany such as Nitty Gritty Slam, School of Night, Albany Poets Presents…, and the Albany Word Fest for over 13 years. As a poet and performer, Thom has been featured at many of the upstate poetry and spoken word events from Saratoga to Woodstock as well as LarkFest, Art on Lark, 1st Friday, and the Albany Word Fest.

This program is made possible in part through a Community Art$Grant, a program funded by the Arts Center of the Capital Region through the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
