Nitty Gritty Slam #37 – The Points Are Not The Point, But They Do Count

We are back at Valentine’s this coming Tuesday, February 5 with the 37th edition of Nitty Gritty Slam!

This time around we are back in our 1st and 3rd Tuesday groove and having another Open Slam where the points count. One of the major things that we try to remind people, especially new poets getting involved in slam, is that “the points are not the point, the poetry is the point”. That is true, but in the case of our open slams and choosing who will be competing in the finals to form Team Nitty Gritty 2013, the points do count at the end of the night. And from the looks of things, the leader board for this season is getting tight.

This past Tuesday at NGS #36 the returning (Team NGS 2012 member and Season One Champion of Champions) ILLiptical took third place while Poetyc Visionz and Christopher The Poet battled it out until the bitter end with Albany’s newest slammer, Christopher taking home his first NGS win. With that win Christopher The Poet squeaked past Algorhythm as the points leader (so far).

This is going to be a great night of poetry as we get closer to the next semi-final coming up in April.

Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and Frequency North are bringing slam back to Albany with the Nitty Gritty Slam.

NGS takes place at Valentine’s (17 New Scotland Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.

If you’re not into slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic before the slam hosted by NGS Coach Mojavi.

Sign up begins at 7PM, open mic starts at 7:30, and the slam, hosted by Thom Francis, starts at 8PM.

Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.
