Nitty Gritty Slam #21 at Valentine’s on Tuesday, July 3

The Nitty Gritty Slam is turning 21! It’s time to celebrate and what better way to do that than a good, old fashion poetry slam at our favorite local rock and roll bar.

Last week we completed Team Nitty Gritty by welcoming D. Colin and ILLiptical after our “blood sport” competition at Valentines. They are joining Shannon “In The Money” Shoemaker, Elizag, and Kevin Peterson representing Albany at the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte in August.

We can not say this enough, this is the first time that a slam team from Albany has competed at the Nationals! This is a huge step for all of us involved in the poetry and spoken word community of upstate New York. We will be able to show the rest of the country what we already know about this area and the talented artists that call it home.

Join us at NGS #21 on Tuesday July 3rd as start get down to the Nitty Gritty and try to raise funds to send the team down to the Nationals for the first time.

Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series are bringing slam back to Albany with the NITTY GRITTY SLAM.

NGS takes place at Valentine’s (17 New Scotland Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.

If you’re not into slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic before the slam.

Sign up begins at 7PM, open mic starts at 7:30, and the slam starts at 8PM.

Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.

For information on the rules and format of the Nitty Gritty Slam and to meet the team, go to http://nittygrittyslam.com/

If you can not make it out to Valentine’s for the show on Tuesday, we will be streaming the event live right here on AlbanyPoets.com just like we did for Poets Speak Loud on Monday night.

We are now asking everyone in the upstate poetry community to help Team Nitty Gritty make it Charlotte for the NPS by donating to offset some of the costs involved with travel and lodging. If you would like to help, please click the “Donate” link on the top of the page. We have set up some thank you gifts that you can choose from. We have all of that information on our support page.

A big thank you to everyone who has already contributed to Albany Poets and continue to support the poets and poetry of the area.
