The NYS Writers Institute is extending the deadline to register for an upcoming poetry workshop with Fence editor Rebecca Wolff and a Short Fiction and Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop with Jo Page. There are only a couple of days left to get your application in to be a part of these workshops.

The New York State Writers Institute is pleased to offer two writing workshops in the fall semester of 2011, a Poetry Workshop taught by Writing Fellow Rebecca Wolff, and a Short Fiction and Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop offered by Writer-in-Residence Jo Page.

Poetry Workshop Offered by Writers Institute Fellow Rebecca Wolff

New York State Writers Institute Writing Fellow Rebecca Wolff will conduct an intermediate to advanced poetry workshop during the Fall 2011 semester. The workshop will give students opportunities to develop and revise poems; emphasis will be on taking each poem on its own terms, and some work will be done to determine those terms. This work will include presentation to and discussion with the group of influences and interests vis à vis poetic lineage.

The workshop is scheduled for eight Wednesday nights (October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16, 30) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The class will take place on the University at Albany’s uptown campus. The workshop is limited to ten writers and is open to UAlbany English graduate students as well as members of the general community. Admission is based on the submission of writing samples. To be considered, submit manuscripts to the Writers Institute according to the guidelines listed below.

Short Fiction and Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop Offered by Writer-in-Residence Jo Page

New York State Writers Institute Writer-in-Residence Jo Pagewill conduct a workshop for writers interested in crafting short works of fiction or creative nonfiction. Using writing exercises and participants’ individual works, we will observe and develop the techniques that make a story believable, whether it took place in real life or was generated in the author’s imagination.

Additionally, in this workshop we will incorporate readings from the Institute’s Visiting Writers series, permitting participants to discover the authors’ work prior to attending their readings. We will discuss excerpts from travel writer Ian Frazier, cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum, speculative fiction author Colson Whitehead, science writer Dava Sobel, and novelist Tom Perrotta.  It is expected that participants attend either the seminars or readings of these writers.

The workshop is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. on eight Tuesday nights (October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 8, 15, 22, December 6) plus the following dates for the visiting writer appearances: Ian Frazier – Wednesday, October 5; Wayne Koestenbaum – Thursday, October 20; Colson Whitehead – Tuesday, November 1; Dava Sobel –Thursday, November 10; Tom Perrotta – Tuesday, November 29. The workshop sessions and the visiting writer appearances will be held on the University at Albany uptown campus.
