A Reading and Conversation with the author of “Glove Shy”

Join Janet Hurley as she reads from her new memoir, Glove Shy: A Sister’s Reckoning. Set in New Paltz,  it’s the story of  Brian Hurley, a teen of brilliance and wit who, in the 1970s, became the teen protegé of two-time World Heavyweight Champion Floyd Patterson.

The narrative explores  Brian’s ascent in the boxing world, his relationship with Patterson, with a fellow boxer and friend-sometimes-rival Andy Schott and with the author, his sister, and their  family.  Brian’s mental health and substance abuse issues took him out of the ring and into a life his family and friends  struggled to understand.

You need not be a boxing fan to be drawn into this story of love, relationship and reckoning.

I am the disinherited sister of this author. l am appalled by the book on many different levels. The author takes other people’s actions as her own, inserts herself in situations that she was not a part of ,leaves key people out of situations, misrepresented another families tragedy and some of it is pure fantasy. My brother and father would be devastated by this book which is self published .Janet misses the entire reason our family was so dysfunctional and the event that catapulted Brian into boxing. This book is an ode to the greatness of Janet Hurley ,not a loving tribute to Brian.
