Summary


The Richard Snyder Memorial Prize is awarded annually for a manuscript of original poetry by any poet writing in English. The prize winner will receive $1,000 and publication with Ashland Poetry Press. Winners will be announced in the fall of 2024.

Guidelines


The Richard Snyder Memorial Publication Prize honors the memory of Richard Snyder (1925-1986), poet, fiction writer, playwright, professor of English at Ashland University, and in 1969 co-founder (with Robert McGovern) of the Ashland Poetry Press. In selecting manuscripts for this series, Ashland Poetry Press editors keep in mind Snyder’s tenacious dedication to craftsmanship and thematic integrity.

Submissions for the prize are to be original collections of poems between 48 to 96 pages. Individual poems within the manuscript may have been previously published, but not the work as a whole. Translations are ineligible.

shland University MFA Program alumni, AU employees or their spouses are ineligible. Family, students, and co-workers of the final judge are ineligible. Multiple manuscripts by the same author may be submitted, but each must be accompanied by a separate $27 reading fee. Manuscripts submitted in previous years may also be resubmitted, but (again) must be accompanied by a new reading fee.

Payment


The Winner of the Snyder Prize Receives:

  • $1,000.00;
  • Publication of winning manuscript in a paperback edition; and
  • 25 copies of the published book (in lieu of royalties).
