R. Dionysius Whiteurs to Read at Poetry on the Loose

Ron Whiteurs

The Poetry on the Loose series rolls on this coming Saturday in Sugar Loaf with featured poet Ron Whiteurs. If you were at the 2010 Word Fest Open Mic, you know that kind of humor that he brings to the mic. Every time we have had the opportunity to see and hear him perform,we have been blown away by his control of the English language.

The next program in the the Poetry on the Loose Reading/Performance Series will feature Ron (R. Dionysius) Whiteurs.  The event will be held at 23 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf at the Seligmann Estate at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 1.  Following the feature, others are welcome to read original work.  Admission is free.

Whiteurs’ work has been published in ArabesqueHome Planet NewsChronogramHungerThe Rondout Review, and the Swiss journal Wuzz Buzzin.  Never content with the printed page alone, he has slammed at the Nuyorican, featured at the Outloud Festival, and performed at the Byrdcliffe Barn as part of Summerjazz.  He formed the “amateur-amateur-amateur” rock n’ roll band Glory-Hole Bishops of the Holy See in which he starred as lead non-singer and song writer, recorded poetry for Steve Charney’s Knock-on-Wood show when it was on WAMC, starred in the Igneous It production of Ox Necks in Tweed, and appeared in the film Trapped in Amber.

Born in the Bronx and brought up in the hills of Mahwah, New Jersey, Ron Whiteurs has lived in the New Paltz-Rosendale region since 1966.  With an MA from SUNY New Paltz, he taught English at that institution in 1970-71.  Those who have enjoyed his inimitable work in recent years must doubt that his classes can have been as provocative.

The next Poetry on the Loose reading will be held at 3:30 on October 6 with Eileen Van Hook as featured reader.
