On Tuesday, September 6, 2011, the Nitty Gritty Slam began at Valentine’s in Albany. This was a historic evening as Albany Poets, the Frequency North Reading Series at the College of Saint Rose, and Urban Guerilla Theater combined forces to bring a brand-new poetry slam venue to the Capital Region.
On that night Tammy Lopez won the first slam and that was just the beginning of the long-running open mic/poetry slam series that just one year later sent a team to the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, North Carolina.
