The Poets Speak Loud open mic series continues at McGeary’s in downtown Albany on Monday, September 24, with featured reader Margot Malia.
Margot Malia Lynch-Steiner is a poet, singer-songwriter, musician, and artist. She has performed in cafes, bars, nightclubs, and on the streets all over the east coast, including The Boston Garden and CBGB’s. Over the course of a decade in Boston, Margot discovered her singing voice while performing with The Jeff Robinson Trio in The Poetry Jam. Although Margot prefers to read her poems and perform her songs on the stage, she has also written a poetry chapbook titled
“Tropical Storm”. Margot has co-hosted a poetry open mic with educator and renowned poet Regie Gibson in Cambridge, MA. She also was the creator and host of Poet Rock Ritual—an open mic for poets accompanied by musicians staged in Saratoga Springs, NY.
She has an extensive career in freelance photography, film, video, and theater production—in the spotlight and behind the scenes. She currently works full time for a CBS news affiliate. Margot is classically trained on the piano and violin. She was awarded a music scholarship to SUNY Plattsburgh where she got her BA in TV Production and Photography. Margot dove into poetry as early as her high school years, and strongly developed her craft in college where she was intrigued in particular by Women’s Studies courses.
Margot Malia’s adventurous nature and fiery spirit is evident in all of her creative endeavors. She is known in the Roller Derby world as “Mathundra Storm” when she competed with The Hellions of Troy Roller Derby league for over three years. While studying in England at Chester University, she played rugby and traveled all over Europe. She is currently also training in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Margot comes from a very creative and incredibly talented family of poets, photographers, educators, graffiti artists, and authors, who have all contributed to her life extensively. Her mother, Mary Ann Lynch, made a documentary film about the prolific poet Lyn Lifshin called Not Made of Glass. Mary Ann is also an award-winning photographer who has exhibited her work all over the world.
Margot now resides with her musician and carpenter husband and two cats in the Saratoga Springs area. Margot is a dynamic, multitalented powerhouse who writes about metaphysics, joy, rediscoveries, the heart, the human experience and our connection to the earth. The spirit and ways of Hawaii (her birthplace) is frequently integrated in her work. She is juggling many multi-media performance ideas and is currently working on a full-length album and book of poetry.
