Nitty Gritty Slam #97 Featuring Fable

AP-Event-NGS-97

The Summer of Nitty Gritty continues with NGS 97 on Tuesday, July 7 at The Low Beat. Join us for a great night of poetry and spoken word with an open mic, featured poet Fable, and a slam.

We are raising funds to help Team Nitty Gritty (Elizag, Daniel Summerhill, Amani, and Poetyc Visionz) get to Oakland. If you would like to donate to the team to help cover travel costs, please click here -> http://www.gofundme.com/vyzjac. We will have more information on fund raising events and more ways to get involved in the coming weeks.

Marcel “Fable” Price is a North American writer, teacher, community activist, performer, and event host who originated in West Michigan.

Fable has performed in venues all over the United States, and with a very versatile poetry arsenal is not scared of any venue or crowd, be it a collegiate environment, public school classroom, a cafe or a dimly lit bar, be sure he will give you his all. He is also one of the key organizers of the first ever blind/deaf friendly ArtPrize exhibit. ArtPrize is held every year in Grand Rapids, MI and is the LARGEST visual art competition in the world.

But, although he is a man of many skill sets, cultivating the youth and community relations are what Fable truly is passionate about. Through after-school programs and assemblies alongside his collaborative, “The Diatribe” he uses spoken word to empower the youth to use their own voices to spark positive change. You can also catch him performing and hosting three nights a week in Michigan – Detroit, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.

If you’re not into competing in the slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic hosted by Kevin Peterson before the slam. Sign up begins at 7:00pm, open mic starts at 7:30, and then Thom Francis starts the slam at 8:00pm. Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.

If you can’t make it out to the show that night, be sure to follow along on Twitter! We will be live tweeting pictures and results all night at @NittyGrittySlam and #NGS97.

Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series have brought slam back to Albany with the Nitty Gritty Slam at The Low Beat (335 Central Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.
