This Friday, November 3, 2023, the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and the Upstate Artists Guild kick off Poetic License – Albany 2023 at the Fish Market in Troy, NY.
“Ekphrastic art” is defined as the response of an artist in one medium to a work of art by an artist in another medium. Its more common manifestation is in poetry written about visual art, e.g., paintings, photographs, drawings, sculpture. Poetic License – Albany is a project that turns that around, giving local visual artists an opportunity to respond to the work of poets.
This year’s exhibit of 31 pieces of art features poetry by Kate McNairy, Carole Fults, Kate McCarroll Moore, Noah Kucij, Robert A. Miller, Margaret McDermott, Megeen R. Mulholland. Christine Orio, Mary K. O’Melveny, Brian Liston, Susan Carroll Jewell, Chloe Glenn, Elaine Kenyon, Anna Boughtwood, Kathleen Anne Smith, Rebecca Schumejda, Don Maurer, David Walsh, and Tom Corrado and artwork by Maureen Kelly, Julia Baldovin, Jason Medicine Eagle Martinez, Onna Adams, Tess Lecuyer, Nina Stanley, Lucia Mabel Smith, Rebecca Schoonmaker, Thomasa Dwyer Nielsen, Sven Willets, Ann Womack. Patrice Malatestinic, Ryan Smithson, Timothy Reidy, Thom Francis, Tina Johnston, Phil Palmieri, and Lisa Schweigert.
Last year, inspired by a project created by the Poetry Barn in West Hurley, NY and the Arts Society of Kingston (ASK), we created our own version of this project which we called Poetic License – Albany. 62 poets submitted one hundred thirteen individual poems; ultimately, 18 works of visual art were exhibited at the Art Associates Gallery & at Lark Hall in Albany, with three readings held in conjunction with the exhibits.
Following that success, the HVWG and the UAG are excited to work together again in 2023 for collaboration between poets and visual artists in the Capital District. This year, we present Poetic License – Albany in November at the Fish Market in Troy AND in December at the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany.
This year, 95 poems were submitted, with 42 chosen for the next stage. Of those 42 poems, 21 poems were selected by 19 artists to be part of the show.
