The Truth Tellers: A Two Day Poetry Workshop with Jerrice Baptiste

Writers in the Mountains (WIM) presents The Truth Tellers Poetry Workshop with Jerrice Baptiste, a two-day intensive held Wednesday and Thursday, October 5 – 6, 2022, from to 11 am to 2 pm. The class will be held at the Pine Hill Community Center, 287 Main Street, Pine Hill, NY. Advance registration is required.

In order to open our hearts to explore the question of tragedy in the world, we will use writing skills to connect with our own inner truth. We will share the writing we do in class and at home to explore how anger, resentment, hate can appear in our own personal lives, what part we might play in that, and how new awareness can influence our writing toward the positive. In the Truth Tellers Workshop, we will use guided visualizations, writing prompts, discussions and supportive feedback to address these concepts and to access tools to deepen our writing skills. We will read works by Naomi Shihab Nye, St. Catherine of Siena; Joy Harjo and others as models to inspire us, and as beacons along the path.

Jerrice Baptiste is the author of eight books. She has been published extensively in journals such as The Yale Review, Mantis, Bluestem Review, Lowle; Penumbra Literary & Art Journal; The Minetta Review, Artemis Journal; The Caribbean Writer; and many others. She has been the recipient of a Residency for the Women’s Leadership Program at the Omega Institute. She is currently Poet in Residence at the Prattsville Art Center & Residency. Jerrice has been the featured poet at the Woodstock Poetry Society, Planet Poet in Roxbury, NY, and The International Women’s Writing Guild. She has been facilitating poetry workshops for over 15 years in the Hudson Valley, NY.
