When we started the Brass Tacks series at The Low Beat we promised that we would be bringing in some of the finest poets and spoken word artists to grace the stage as features. Well, the time has come to present our very first featured poet and we are very happy to welcome Mugabi Byenkya to Albany on Tuesday, October 16!
Mugabi Byenkya was born in Nigeria to Ugandan parents and is currently based between Kampala and Toronto. Mugabi was longlisted for the Babishai Niwe Poetry Award in 2015, has been featured on Brittle Paper, The Good Men Project, African Writer, Arts and Africa, and The Kalahari Review amongst others. His writing is used to teach international high school English. His debut novel, Dear Philomena, was published in 2017 and he recently concluded a 30 city North America/East Africa tour in support of this. An advocate of the intersections between chronic/mental illness, disability, writing and trauma, Mugabi leads effective workshops to unpack and channel pain.
This is going to be a great show that should not be missed.
The Brass Tacks Open Mic for poetry and spoken word takes place on the first and third Tuesday of each and every month at The Low Beat (335 Central Ave., Albany). Sign up starts at 7:00 p.m. with the poetry and spoken word kicking off at 7:30.
