Writer Donna Minkowitz will host a one-day summer memoir workshop in Beacon on Saturday, July 21, from 2-5 PM. The fee is $60 for local/upstate residents, $75 for others. In this three-hour craft workshop, we will work on writing about our lives using the five senses, lyricism, emotion, critical thinking, and the art of storytelling. Each student will get extensive feedback in a supportive atmosphere. The class will also give some attention to publishing, questions of revision and structure, and any ethical issues students are concerned about.
Donna Minkowitz has taught memoir writing for 20 years, at venues including the 92nd Street Y, the New York Writers Workshop, The Kitchen, and the Mt. Chocorua Writers Workshop. Her recent memoir Growing Up Golem was a finalist for both a Lambda Literary Award and for the Judy Grahn Nonfiction Award, and she won a Lambda Literary Award for her first memoir, Ferocious Romance: What My Encounters with the Right Taught Me about Sex, God, and Fury. Minkowitz has also written for the New York Times Book Review, The Nation, Slate, the Village Voice, and New York magazine. A graduate of Yale University, she is the recipient of a GLAAD Media Award.
