The Summer of Nitty Gritty continues with NGS 99 on Tuesday, August 4 at The Low Beat. Join us for a great night of poetry and spoken word with an open mic, featured poet 2015 Suffern Slam Society team member Nina Belen, and a slam.
*** This will be the last Nitty Gritty Slam event at home before the team travels out to Oakland for the National Poetry Slam. We are raising funds to help Team Nitty Gritty (Elizag, Daniel Summerhill, Amani, and Poetyc Visionz) get to Califonia. If you would like to donate to the team to help cover travel costs, please click here -> http://www.gofundme.com/vyzjac. You will not want to miss this incredible team before the head west to compete against 71 other top teams. ***
Taylor Mali, author of “What Teachers Make” said, “Mild-mannered grocery store employee by day, Nina is a well-known performance poet who has twice performed at the National Poetry Slam. Her poetry has been described as ‘exceptionally appealing,’ ‘heartbreakingly honest,’ and ‘subversively deep for work so overtly entertaining.’
If you’re not into competing in the slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic hosted by Kevin Peterson before the slam. Sign up begins at 7:00pm, open mic starts at 7:30, and then Thom Francis starts the slam at 8:00pm. Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.
If you can’t make it out to the show that night, be sure to follow along on Twitter! We will be live tweeting pictures and results all night at @NittyGrittySlam and #NGS99.
Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series have brought slam back to Albany with the Nitty Gritty Slam at The Low Beat (335 Central Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.
