On Tuesday, December 16 we will gather at The Low Beat for our annual winter tradition – The Dead Poet Slam! We will be hosting an event that goes against one of the biggest rules that we spend so much time telling you about. You have been told that in the slam you have to recite your own work, you cannot read other people’s poetry. Well, for ONE NIGHT ONLY, that rule goes right out the window for The Dead Poet Slam!
For this special edition of NGS, you HAVE to read another poets work. And that poet has to be dead. In the past couple of years that we have held this special slam, we have seen some incredible performances from local spoken word artists channeling deceased poets and writers.
Bring out your Poe! Bring out your Whitman! Bring out your DEAD! The standard NGS “8-4-2″ format will still apply: three rounds, three minutes, prizes and points at the end.
You are not going to want to miss this 84th installment of Nitty Gritty Slam on December 16 at The Low Beat.
If you’re not into competing in the slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic hosted by Kevin Peterson before the slam. Sign up begins at 7:00pm, open mic starts at 7:30, and then Thom Francis starts the slam at 8:00pm. Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.
If you can’t make it out to the show that night, be sure to follow along on Twitter – #NGS83.
Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series have brought slam back to Albany with the Nitty Gritty Slam at The Low Beat (335 Central Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.
