Upcoming Poetry Events – Week of October 13, 2013

You can’t say that there are no poetry and spoken word events in the area. This week is packed full of open mics, events, readings, and slams. Everything starts on Sunday with the Poetry + Prose open mic in Troy and continues throughout the week with stops in Western Massachsetts (Parlor Cafe and Northampton Slam), Albany (Nitty Gritty Slam #56, Frequency North, and the Third Thursday Poetry Night), the Hudson Valley, and Schenectady for the Derrick Brown show at Proctors.

A storytelling night at The Olde English Pub with a different theme each month. This month’s theme is “Things that go bump in the night”.

7:00pm – Colonie Tuesday Night Live Poets’ Corner
William K. Sanford Town Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road, Loudonville, NY
ocal poets and writers of all ages are invited to present six to ten minutes of their original work at this open reading forum. The public is encouraged to stop in and listen. Hosted by William Robert Foltin.

7:00pm – Nitty Gritty Slam #56 – The Annual Inappropriate Slam
Valentine’s, 17 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY
We are back home at Valentine’s for Nitty Gritty Slam #56, the second annual Inappropriate Slam. We will be back with our traditional “8-4-2″ slam format right after our open mic for poetry and spoken word. This year we have some new rules (the no-repeat rule is in effect) and some exciting featured poets lined up. Sign up begins at 7PM, open mic starts at 7:30, and the slam starts at 8PM. Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.

8:00pm – Northampton Poetry Open Mic
Hinge, 48 Main St., Northampton, MA
Northampton’s only weekly open mic poetry night offers some of the best, most creative voices in the county. Every Tuesday night at 8:00pm. Come down and listen. Come down and share your words. Academic or slam, spoken word or political: Your words are welcome.

7:00pm – Poetry Slam at Parlor Cafe

7:30pm – Third Thursday Poetry Night

Long running monthly open mic (1 poem) with a featured poet hosted by Dan Wilcox. This month’s featured poet is Andy Clausen.

7:30pm – Derrick Brown at Proctors
Proctors, 432 State Street, Schenectady, NY
Poet, performer, and founder of Write Bloody Publishing, Derrick Brown is bringing his spoken word show to the Capital Region at Proctors on Thursday, October 17 with Mary Panza opening the show.

7:30pm – Frequency North
College of Saint Rose, 420 Western Ave., Albany, NY
“Frequency North,” the visiting writers series at The College of Saint Rose, returns for its ninth year of readings by today’s most riveting, entertaining and thought-provoking authors and poets. The featured reader for this edition of Frequency North is Rigoberto González for a special National Day on Writing Event.

8:00pm – Starving Artist Thursdays
Hudson River Coffee House, 227 Quail Street, Albany, NY 12203
A weekly open Mic for music, poetry, and spoken word at one of Albany’s best new coffee shops.

Friday, October 18

8:00pm – Hudson Valley Writers’ Center 
Hudson Valley Writers’ Center, 300 Riverside Drive, Sleepy Hollow, NY
Featured Poets + open mike for poets, fiction writers, essayists with rotating hosts. Located in the restored Philipse Manor railroad station, which is approx. 30 miles north of midtown Manhattan and 2.6 miles north of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

8:00pm – The Parlor Cafe Open Mic
The Parlor Cafe, 303 Ashland Street, North Adams, MA
A weekly open mic each and every Friday at the Parlor Cafe in North Adams for poets, musicians, and artists. Signup at the bar and get ready for the show, starting at 8:00pm.

Saturday, October 19

7:00pm – Mudd Poets Poetry Series

Monthly poetry open mic series with featured readers hosted by Robert Milby.
