We are back at Valentine’s on Tuesday, May 21 with the 45th edition of Nitty Gritty Slam!
Last week, at NGS #44, we had our Grand Slam and put together Team Nitty Gritty 2013 with Christopher The Poet, Daniella Watson, Algorhythm, Kevin Peterson, Poetyc Visionz, and ILLiptical. These incredible local poets will be representing Albany and NGS at events all summer long starting with the Buffalo Niagara International Poetry Slam on Saturday, June 8.
At this first slam after the very exciting team selection tournament, we are back with our Old School Slam format. Everyone is welcome to sign up and compete in the traditional “8-4-2” slam for cash prizes. We will also have a special raffle to help raise money for the slam team. What we are raffling off? T-shirts? CDs? Books? You never know what we will be bringing with us from Albany Poets HQ.
This is going to be a great night of poetry and spoken word as we kick off National Poetry Slam season and get ready to send our team to Boston.
Albany Poets, Urban Guerilla Theatre, and The Frequency North Reading Series are bringing slam back to Albany with the Nitty Gritty Slam.
Last year a slam team from Albany, representing Nitty Gritty Slam, went to the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC. This year, a new team will be heading to Boston to show the rest of the country the amazing talent that lives right here in Albany, NY.
NGS takes place at Valentine’s (17 New Scotland Ave.) on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday’s of each month.
If you’re not into slam, but want to get on stage and share your work, we have an open mic before the slam hosted by slam coach Mojavi.
Sign up begins at 7:00pm, open mic starts at 7:30, and then Slam Master Thom Francis starts the slam at 8:00pm.
Admission is $5.00 ($3.00 with student ID). This is an 18+ show.
