We are very proud to be partnering with the Albany Barn again in 2013 to bring teens through the process of writing, editing, and performing their poetry with the return of the From The Page to The Stage workshop series. This time around the series will be taking place at the Brighter Choice Middle School for Girls. This will be a four week workshop led my local poets Mojavi, Avery, Jill Crammond, and Kevin Peterson.
Here is more information on the workshop and how you can get involved:
Albany Barn is again partnered with the Albany Poets to offer “From the Page to the Stage,” a poetry and spoken word writing workshop for teens and young adults in January 2013 concluding with an evening of performance on February 8th.
“From the Page to the Stage” workshops will be held on Mondays from 4:00pm – 5:00pm, January 7, 14, 21, and 28 at the Brighter Choice Middle School for Girls (395 Elk St., Albany). Equal attention will be placed on both the literary and performative aspects of poetry and spoken word; all poetic styles will be welcome. Established local poets Mojavi, Avery, Jill Crammond, and Kevin Peterson will lead participants through the process of writing, editing, and performing poetry.
K. Mojavi Wright has been actively writing poetry since the age of 7. He has been featured or read at AS220 in Rhode Island, Manhattan’s Nuyorican Poetry Cafe, The Sugar Shack Cafe in Harlem, Mangoes in Washington, DC, and local venues including the Lionheart Cafe, Lark Tavern, Poets in the Park, and Mother Earth’s Café. He has self-published two chapbooks: Verbal Hieroglyphics vol. 1 and vol. 2, and co-founded the decade-long reading series known as “Soul Kitchen.” He is currently founder/director of the Urban Guerrilla Theatre poetry/spoken word performance art group, which holds a monthly showcase and open mic at the WAMC Linda. Mojavi is also one of the organizers and promoters of the newly minted “Nitty Gritty Slam” in conjunction with Albany Poets, and the “Frequency North” reading series at the College of Saint Rose.
Hailing originally from the Helderberg Mountains Avery Stempel has been in and out of the poetry scene for over a decade. His college days saw him venture deeply into the wilds of poetry and he has been lost there ever since, escaping from time to time to perform in front of audiences and then vanishing back into the nether realms of run on sentences, flowery metaphors and convoluted analogies.
Jill Crammond considers herself a literary mama, as she is a mommy first, and published poet, second, and an art teacher/gallery owner third. Her poems have been published in a variety of journals, including Perceptions, Many Waters, and the anthology Comfort Food.
Kevin Peterson has been writing and reading poetry for 15 years. He majored in Performance Study at Villanova University, where he was also an editor for the school’s literary journal, Anthology. He is a regular competitor/performer at the Nitty Gritty Slam, and member of the 2012 slam team selected to compete at the National Poetry Slam. He volunteers for both the Albany Barn and Albany Poets, both instructing and hosting the first ever Page Meets Stage performance in 2012.
Workshop participants will then perform their original works at Stage 1 on February 8, 2013. The workshops are free for teenagers and young adults but spaces are limited. To register, call 518-935-4858 or email marie@albanybarn.org.
