We kicked off the second season of the Nitty Gritty Slam on Tuesday, September 4 with one of our smaller crowds. But we overcame and had a great night of poetry and spoken word with some new, dynamic voices on the mic.
We started everything off with the open mic that saw a new poet, Damon, come up and share a very personal piece which led to Mojavi reading a new break-up poem. Dan Wilcox and Thom Francis finished off the open mic part of the night with a piece called “Alcoholism” and Charles Bukowski’s classic “Poetry Readings” respectively.
The talent pool for the 25th edition of NGS was small, but mighty with new three poets competing for the first time the slam. One of the poets was certainly not a stranger to the stage, as he is the open mic host and slam coach for Team Nitty Gritty. At the final call for signup, five poets, Traci, Dan Wilcox, Mojavi, Billy, and Elizag battled it out to start the second season of the Nitty Gritty Slam.
In the end Mojavi shocked the world by walking away with the top prize after a close final round against a very strong competitor in Elizag.
Here is how it all went down…
