Alan Casline sent along information on the next Poetry Reading at Pine Hollow Arboretum (16 Maple Ave., Slingerlands, New York) coming up on Friday June 15, 2012 at 6:30 PM.
This reading will feature poet Gary Lawless with an open mic where others poets can read three short poems or two longer poems. Also two pages of prose will be acceptable. Light refreshments. Donations welcomed. Contact Alan Casline at acasline@aol.com for more information.
Gary Lawless was born in Belfast, Maine in 1951. He is co-owner with Beth Leonard of the best bookstore in Maine, the independent Gulf of Maine Books found in Brunswick. Gary is the editor/publisher of Blackberry Books. His publications serve as inspiration for my own Benevolent Bird Press and are responsible for bringing the work of Japanese poet Nanao Sakaki to my attention. He lives as caretaker at Chimney Farm in Nobleboro, home of writers Henry Beston and Elizabeth Coatsworth and with poet Karin Spitfire led a 2010 Summer of Celebration of herrings & sardines with stops in all the Maine towns that once participated in processing this now threatened resource. One of the early bio-regional poets, his environmental activism continues on many fronts including the wishsongs of his life healing verse.“Words for me are living entities,” he has said and his life shows this through his ownwritings, his teaching and in the Gulf of Maine bookstorewhere lovers of language gather. His love of language is also found in his energetic free expression and storytelling ability. His work has appeared in ROOTDRINKER, NORMANSKILL and in his book Sardine Shards (2010 Benevolent Bird Press). Bringing Gary Lawless to our corner of the poetic universe is a coup and having him for both a poetry reading and a workshop makes for a great opportunity.
