This coming Thursday at the Bright Hill Literary Center in Treadwell, the Word Thursdays series continues with a celebration of Women’s History Month with a featured performance from Irish poet, novelist, and singer Judith Mok.
On Thursday, March 29, at 7 pm, Bright Hill Literary Center will celebrate Women’s History Month by featuring Dublin, Ireland poet, novelist, and singer Judith Mok. She will perform and read their work after the open mic, during which all those present are invited to read their own work or that of others that reflects the Women’s History Month theme, both personally and politically, for up to five minutes.
Judith Mok was born in Bergen in the Netherlands and lived abroad for most of her life; Ireland has been her home for the last 15 years. She has published three novels and four books of poetry as well as short stories, and she has written for radio and print media. Her short stories have been short listed twice for the Francis Mc Manus award and her first novel The innocents at the Circus for the Prix de l’Academie Francaise. Her work has appeared nationally and internationally in literary magazines and Anthologies. The Irish Times about her new book of poetry Gods of Babel, said “Many of the poems in the volume contemplate questions of belonging and identity, such as the lyrical ‘Amsterdam Sunday,’ which, mourning a lost childhood landscape, concludes that ‘My Sunday is a Dublin one.’ Music is an overarching theme, and the attempts at capturing the magic of singing ,convey some sense of wonder and amazement. Gods of Babel contains beautiful imagery and promising ideas.” Judith Mok travels the world working as an internationally acclaimed lyric soprano and performing in operas. Recently she toured the USA, beginning at Lincoln Center in New York with her musical/literary, one-woman show as Molly Bloom in “Molly says NO!”
