Don Levy

The upstate poetry and spoken word scene is one of the busiest in the country and the next week is no different. Here are a few events of note that are coming up in our poetry community featuring some familiar names.

First up is the Live at the Living Room reading, hosted by Don Levy, at the Pride Center with Mojavi as the featured poet this month.

Live From The Living Room proudly announces our next reading, January 11, 2012 with UGT poet Mojavi. Live From the Living Room is a featured reading/open mic series held the 2nd Wednsday of the month @ The Pride Center of The Capitol District, 322 Hudson Avenue, Albany, NY. The event is hosted by Don Levy and there is a suggested $2.00 donation. This is a straight-friendly event.

This coming Saturday, January 14,  in Woodstock, Guy Reed will reading his work as the featured poet at the monthly Woodstock Poetry Society gathering at the Colony Cafe. Here is the information from Guy himself:

Please join me at the Colony Cafe in Woodstock (22 Rock City Road) at 2 p.m. Saturday January 14th as I continue my mini-tour in support of my first chapbook of poems, The Effort To Hold Light. Frank Boyer will also read and there will be an open mic for those of you so inclined to read or simply for your enjoyment.

If you are not able to make this reading, I will also be reading February 3rd in Florida, NY at the Florida Library Series, February 25th at the Half-Moon Bookstore in Uptown Kingston, March 9th at Mezzaluna Cafe in Saugerties, March 28th at Inquiring Minds Bookstore in Saugerties, and April 14th at the Unitarian Congregation’s poetry series in Kingston.

Woodstock Poetry Society & Festival as part of the Woodstock Arts Consortium is sponsoring the following  poetry event as part of the Woodstock “Second Saturdays” Art Events.  For a full listing of “Second Saturday” events, see: www.artsinwoodstock.org.  For further information contact Phillip  Levine (845)246-8565 or email: pprod@mindspring.com

Dan Wilcox and his Poetry Motel Foundation are teaming up with the UAG Gallery for a special Occupy The Words open mic on Wednesday, January 18. As Dan says in his email announcing the event, “Human Needs Not Corporate Greed — We are the 99%”.

The Poetry Motel Foundation, in partnership with the Upstate Artists Guild, announces an open mic for literary responses/reactions to the Occupy Albany/Occupy Wall Street movement, to be held on Wednesday January 18, at 7PM, at the UAG Gallery, 247 Lark St., Albany, NY.  The open mic is being held in conjunction with the current exhibit at the Gallery, “Occupy UAG,” visual art from the Occupy Albany movement.  Suggested donation is $5.00 which supports the UAG Gallery.  The open mic host will be local poet & peace activist, Dan Wilcox.

Bring poems, songs, rants inspired by Occupy Albany/Occupy Wall St., by the fight for economic justice — Read your best (or worst) anti-corporate screed.

For more information contact the UAG at www.upstateartistsguild.org or Dan Wilcox at dwlcx@earthlink.net.

We are currently working on a brand new events calendar for the poetry and spoken word open mics and readings in upstate New York (this means you guys in the Hudson Valley, too) that we will be launching in the next few weeks. If you are a host or venue that is putting on poetry events, please send us an email at info@albanypoets.com with the information and we will add it to our ever-growing calendar. Albany Poets has been posting and promoting the poetry and spoken word of upstate New York and publishing an events calendar since we began in 2000 and we strive to continue that tradition to bring the art to the people.
