Susan Oringel

Susan Oringel – “Carnevale”

Susan Oringel, a local writer and psychologist will be reading from her first full-length book of poetry, Carnevale, at the Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza in Albany on Saturday, April 6 at 3 p.m.

Carnevale is a journey in poetry through the lives and deaths of her parents–who both grew up in Coney Island in the 30’s and 40’s–and of her partner Don Howard, all of whom died within a five-year span from 2002-2007. It is also a remembrance of foods, cooking, laughter, get-togethers, Kennedy’s assassination and the bombing of the Twin Towers, memories both personal and national, and of her journey through grief and the trudging steps taken back toward the living. There are book cover blurbs by Jackie Craven, an award-winning local poet, Larissa Shmailo, a well-known New York City-based poet and writer, and the MacArthur Award winning poet, Eleanor Wilner.

A poet, writer, creative writing teacher, and psychologist in private practice in Albany, NY, Susan Oringel’s poetry chapbook My Coney Island was published by Finishing Line Press in 2019. Her poetry and fiction appear in various journals and in the translated Latin American poetry collection: Messengers of Rain, (Groundwoods Press).
