The William C. Morris Award celebrates the achievement of a previously unpublished author, or authors, who have made a strong literary debut in writing for young adult readers. The work cited will illuminate the teen experience and enrich the lives of its readers through its excellence, demonstrated by:
- Compelling, high-quality writing and/or illustration
- The integrity of the work as a whole
- Its proven or potential appeal to a wide range of teen readers
Guidelines
- The award and honor book winner(s) must be authors of original young adult works of fiction in any genre, nonfiction, poetry, a short story collection, or graphic work.
- The award winner(s) must not have previously published a book for any audience. Books previously published in another country, however, may be considered if an American edition has been published during the period of eligibility.
- Works of joint authorship are eligible, but only if all contributors meet all other criteria. For example, graphic works created by an author and an illustrator are eligible, but only if both contributors have never published before.
- Books must have been published between November 1 to October 31 of the year preceding announcement of the award.
- Edited works and anthologies are not eligible.
- The short list may consist of up to five titles.
- The award may be given posthumously provided the other criteria are met.
- The winner and short-listed book authors are encouraged to attend an award ceremony following the announcement of the award at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting.
- To be eligible, a title must have been designated by its publisher as being either a young adult book or one published for the age range that YALSA defines as “young adult,” i.e., 12 through 18. Books published for adults or for younger children are not eligible.
- To be eligible, a title must be widely available in the US to libraries and teens.
- Titles that are self-published, published only in eBook format, and/or published from a publisher outside of the US will not be considered eligible until the first year the book is available in print or distributed through a US publishing house.
The Morris Award will be awarded annually at ALA’s Midwinter Youth Media Awards. A shortlist of up to five titles will be announced before the second Monday of December. The release of the shortlist will be coordinated with YALSA/ALA staff to publicize the award and the shortlist.
Calvino Prize

The Calvino Prize is an annual fiction competition sponsored by the Creative Writing Program in the English Department of the University of Louisville. They will be awarded to outstanding pieces of fiction in the fabulist experimentalist style of Italo Calvino. Please note that these prizes are meant to encourage experimental writing, in the mode of Calvino, and are not meant to encourage merely imitative work.
Applicants should submit up to 25 industry standard (double-spaced, 12-point font, pages numbered) pages of a novel, novella, short story, or short collection. Entries which use a smaller font or are single-spaced in order to make a longer work appear to be only 25 pages will be trimmed to approximately 25 industry standard pages. Work previously published is eligible and simultaneous submissions are accepted. An excerpt from a larger work is allowed; however, remember that the selection will be judged on its own merit and so should be able to stand on its own.
The entry fee is USD 25.
Faculty and employees of the University of Louisville may not enter the contest. University of Louisville alumni, former students, and former employees must wait a minimum of three years from their date of separation to be eligible for the Prize.
The winner will receive $2000 (USD) and the winning story will be published in Miracle Monocle, the University of Louisville’s award-winning online literary journal. A runner-up, if named by the Final Judge, will receive $500 (USD).
Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry

The Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry is awarded annually to a book published in the previous calendar year by an African poet. The author receives an award of USD $1,000.
This prize was established to promote African poetry written in English or in translation and to recognize a significant book published each year by an African poet. The prize is open to any book of original poetry, in English, published during the previous calendar year in a standard edition of a full-length collection of poetry written by any African writer. Books must be submitted in the year after their publication. A standard edition is 48 pages or more in length. Only poetry submissions in English can be considered, but published works of translation are welcomed for consideration.
An “African writer” is taken to mean someone who was born in Africa, who is a national or resident of an African country, or whose parents are African.
The author receives an award of USD $1,000.

The CRAFT Flash Fiction Contest, for fiction of no more than 1,000 words, is open to to all writers, and to a variety of genres and styles, including literary fiction.
International submissions are welcome. Multiple submissions are allowed. This contest is for previously unpublished work only. Note: Friends, family, and associates of the judge are not eligible for consideration for the award. Robert Lopez will select three winning stories.

The PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction honors the best published works of fiction by American permanent residents in a calendar year.
Books must be published by commercial, university, or independent presses in the U.S. Books that are self-published, or published by presses that charge for production or editorial services, are not eligible. Regarding translations – a translation from another language into English by the author is eligible; a translation by someone other than the author is not.
Reprints are not eligible and books published by current PEN/Faulkner board members are not eligible.
This award honors the best published works of fiction by American permanent residents in a calendar year.
Authors must be living U.S. citizens or permanent residents. U.S. citizens living abroad are eligible.
The author of the winning book receives a $15,000 prize. The authors of each of the other finalists receive $5,000. The Award is presented at an annual celebration of the year’s distinguished books and authors.
Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Award

The Raiziss/de Palchi Translation Awards recognize outstanding translations into English of modern Italian poetry through a $10,000 book prize and a $25,000 fellowship, given in alternating years. For 2025, the winning translator will receive a $10,000 book prize.
The Raiziss/de Palchi Book Prize is given for the translation into English of a significant work of modern, standard (non-dialect) Italian poetry. Only books published in the United States are eligible for the prize. Publishers may submit books published in any year, but only books by living translators are eligible. Books must be published in a standard edition (48 pages or more). Self-published books are not eligible. Publishers may submit as many titles as they wish.
Books by any translator who meets one of the below criteria on the date of the application deadline, in any given year, are eligible:
- U.S. Citizen, or
- resident of the United States for a ten-year period prior to the submission deadline, or
- Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Legal Permanent Status (LPS), or any subsequent categories designated by the U.S. authorities as conferring similar enhanced status upon non-citizens living in the United States.
The $10,000 Raiziss/de Palchi Book Prize will be given in 2025 for the translation into English of a significant work of modern Italian poetry.
J. I. Staley Prize

The School for Advanced Research (SAR) presents the J. I. Staley Prize to a living author for a book that exemplifies outstanding scholarship and writing in anthropology. The award recognizes innovative works that go beyond traditional frontiers and dominant schools of thought in anthropology and add new dimensions to our understanding of the human species. It honors books that cross subdisciplinary boundaries within anthropology and reach out in new and expanded interdisciplinary directions
By recognizing groundbreaking books and their authors through the J. I. Staley Prize, SAR seeks to stimulate the best in anthropological research and writing. Authors other than anthropologists are eligible to receive the Prize if their work has had a significant impact on scholars and practitioners in the field of anthropology.
To be eligible for the J. I. Staley Prize, a book must currently be in print. It must have been in publication for at least two years before it is nominated and for no longer than eight years. Co-authored books are eligible for the Prize, but edited volumes and textbooks are not. Second or subsequent editions are not eligible for consideration. Please note that books must be published in English.
The J. I. Staley Prize carries a cash award of $7,500.
