Upcoming Literary Events: August 8-14, 2024

This week, we have another great lineup of literary events in the region. Here’s a quick look at the upcoming book discussions, readings, open mics, and workshops.

 

Thursday, August 8

7:00 PM – Word Thursdays Featuring Jacqueline Trimble & Ashley Jones
Bright Hill Press presents Word Thursdays Online featuring Jacqueline Trimble & Ashley Jones broadcasting live on Thursday, August 8.

 

Friday, August 9

1:00 PM – Saratoga Senior Center Poetry Open Mic
The next Saratoga Senior Center Poetry Open Mic is Friday, August 9, with featured poet/author Lale Davidson.

6:00 PM – Poetry Open Mic @ Pine Hollow Arboretum
Bring 3-5 poems to the Pine Hollow Arboretum to be read round-robin style by poets at the Circle of Poetry.

6:00 PM – Peter Gregg – The Sugar Rush @ Northsire Manchester
Author Peter Gregg runs a 1,000-tap sugaring operation in the shadow of Rupert Mountain, Vermont. Join us as he shares the humorous story of two friends with a sweet, golden, syrupy dream, set against the rugged New England wilderness!

6:30 PM – Eric Schnall, I Make Envy on Your Disco @ The White Hart Inn
Eric Schnall will join Oblong Books to read from and talk about his new novel, I MAKE ENVY ON YOUR DISCO. Winner of the Barbara DiBernard Prize in Fiction.

7:30 PM – One Giant Leap: Stories of Movin’ On @ The Poetry Barn
The Bay Area’s long-running Porchlight Storytelling series comes to the Poetry Barn with tales of movin’ on. Featuring Michael Shaieb, Doug Stoley, Kristina Mercer, Katie Von Schleicher, and Paul Boocock. Hosted by Beth Lisick. Music by Eli Crews. Doors at 7 pm, show at 7:30 pm. By Donation.

8:00 PM – Creating Your Collection: A 4-week Generative Poetry Course
In this 4-week course, you can expect to create a coherent, genuine poetry collection that reflects your authentic poetic expression.

 

Saturday, August 10

10:00 AM – Travel Writing: Finding Your Way with Ken Youngblood @ Adirondack Center for Writing
Participants will explore how a writer prepares for travel, the writer’s mindset while traveling, and the skills needed to rekindle the experience in the reader’s mind. During the workshop they will experiment with how to choose words, shape sentences and compose the whole of a compelling piece of travel writing.

12:00 PM – Daniel Mahoney Signs His Newest Picture Book, We Don’t Eat Our Neighbors @ Market Block Books
In this laugh-out-loud picture book perfect for fans of Lyle the Crocodile and Dragons Love Tacos, an alligator family runs into trouble when their son can’t seem to curb his appetite for their new human neighbors.

2:00 PM – Woodstock Poetry Society Reading Featuring Craig Hancock & Marnie Andrews @ Woodstock Library
Craig Hancock and Marnie Andrews will be featured followed by an open mic when the Woodstock Poetry Society meets at the Woodstock Library.

3:00 PM – Book Signing with Gibson Frazier @ The Bookstore Plus
The Bookstore Plus is pleased to host author, Gibson Frazier, for a book signing event on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 3-5 PM to autograph copies of his children’s book “Stop and Smell the Cookies”.

6:00 PM – Sarah Stewart Taylor with Carol Goodman – Agony Hill @ Northshire Manchester
Acclaimed Vermont author Sarah Stewart Taylor will share the first novel in a new historical series set in rural Vermont in the volatile 1960s. Agony Hill is full of a vivid New England atmosphere and the deeply drawn characters that are her trademark. She will be in conversation with fellow mystery author Carol Goodman!

 

Sunday, August 11

2:00 PM – 2nd Sunday @ 2 – Poetry + Prose @ Collar City Mushrooms
The 2nd Sunday @ 2 open mic for poetry and prose is in its 11th year, supporting emerging, published and writers in-between.

5:00 PM – Walking with WordXWord #3 @ The Mount
Follow along as poets offer an exploration of The Mount’s grounds and selected works in the Sculpture At The Mount exhibition. Using a sculpture and the environment as prompts, poets offer new ways of “seeing” what is before us. Walking shoes are advised.

6:00 PM – IHOP Clifton Park – Write-In @ IHOP Clifton Park
We will do 20 minutes of writing and then 20 minutes of chatting. Continuing in a cycle throughout the three and a half hour event!

6:00 PM – Denny’s – Write-In @ Denny’s – East Greenbush
We will do 20 minutes of writing and then 20 minutes of chatting. Continuing in a cycle throughout the three and a half hour event! 

6:00 PM – Everyone Reads Second Sundays Open Mic

Monday, August 12

6:30 PM – Poets’ Circle Open Mic Event @ Schenectady County Public Library
Poets’ Circle must leave its home of the past 14 months. We’d love your presence and support as we become, for now, an itinerant poetry circle with a deep commitment to serving Schenectady.

 

Tuesday, August 13

5:00 PM – Barnes & Noble Wilton – Write-in @ Barnes & Noble – Saratoga
We will do loosely structured 20 minutes of writing and then 20 minutes of chatting. Continuing in a cycle throughout the event.

6:00 PM – Carol Godette – On This Spot Saratoga Springs @ Northshire Saratoga
Join us as Carol Stone Godette, a native of Saratoga Springs, takes us on a captivating journey through the city’s evolving landscape as she shares her observations on the significant transformations it has experienced during her lifetime.

6:30 PM – Adventures in NY History with Bruce Dearstyne @ Guilderland Public Library
An evening exploring the history of New York, as told by “Progressive New York: Change and Reform in the Empire State, 1900-1920 – a Reader” author Bruce W. Dearstyne.

7:00 PM – 2nd Tuesday Open Mic
All-genre open mic out of Bennington hosted by Charlie Rossiter.

 

Wednesday, August 14

12:30 PM – Midday Write Ins @ Mochalisa’s Caffe
Midday Write Ins are a free, shared space to write.

5:45 PM – Writers Group @ Schenectady Public Library – Central Branch
Whether you’ve been doing it forever or just starting out, bring your written words to this volunteer run community group and receive feedback from fellow wordsmiths as time permits.

6:30 PM – Howl Story Slam @ Ausable Brewing Co
Join us Wed, Aug 14, at 6:30 PM for a night of live storytelling with the theme “Close Call.” Anyone can sign up to tell a story at the beginning of the night! Stories must be: No tickets needed. Admission to each slam is a $10/pay-what-you-can donation which will be split between ACW & our Howl partner, NCPR.

7:30 PM – Writers Mic
Writers near and far are welcome to join host Jackie Craven for a lively monthly open mic. 

7:00 PM – Straw Dog Writes Weekly Writers Meet Up
Straw Dog Writers Guild members who would like to spend some time writing together can join a Zoom session. We will spend 15 minutes on introductions, a 45 minute writing session, have a 15 minute discussion, then write for a second 45 minute period of time.
