The Tom Howard/John H. Reid Fiction & Essay Contest welcomes submissions of stories and essays of any theme up to 6,000 words each. Top entries will receive monetary awards and will be published online.

For this contest, a story is any short work of fiction, and an essay is any short work of nonfiction. Writers may submit published or unpublished work. All themes are accepted.

Writers of any age from any region may submit as many stories and essays as they like. Submissions are limited to 6,000 words each.

The winning story and essay will each receive $3,000. The top two winners will also receive two-year gift certificates from the co-sponsor, Duotrope (a $100 value). Ten Honorable Mentions will receive $100 each. The top 12 entries will be published online.
