On Wednesday, May 1, the long-running Caffe Lena Poetry Open Mic series continues at the historic Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs with featured poet Katrinka Moore with Michael Lawrence accompanying her on guitar followed by an open mic for poetry and spoken word.
Katrinka Moore started out in dance and choreography, made a brief foray into performance art, then shifted to poetry, eventually bringing visual components into her work. She is the author of Wayfarers, Numa, Thief, and This is Not a Story, winner of the New Women’s Voices prize. Katrinka will read poems of light and shadow, some set to music, accompanied by Michael Lawrence on guitar.
Michael Lawrence has been a performance art musician and dancer, a guitarist with the band Larry and the Loosers, and a high school physics teacher. In 2015 he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and got to shake Barack Obama’s hand.
This monthly event, hosted by Carol Graser, takes place on the first Wednesday of every month and includes an open mic reading as well as featured poets. Sign up for the open mic starts at 7:00 and readings start at 7:30. Each open mic poet reads two short poems (less than one page) or one longer poem. All styles of poetry are welcome. Admission is $5 general, free for students.
Before the open mic, at 6:00 p.m., there is a Poetry Discussion Group, sponsored by Saratoga Springs Public Library. This month the Poetry Discussion Group will look at a selection of poems from renowned poet, Tony Hoagland.
