CapSci is hosting an evening of scientific insights and inspirations, where concepts are shared in voice, performance, and movement on Tuesday, March 5 at the Albany Pump Station.
This exciting evening of poetry adn spoken word will feature readings from Dr. Kathleen Gillespie, Matthew Burns, Dan Wilcox, Nancy Klepsch, Kendall Hoeft, Carol H. Jewell, and Eli Sands.
Poet Bios:
Dr. Kathleen Gillespie is a scientist, published poet, short story writer, and playwright. As Kate Gillespie, her work has appeared in Gargoyle Magazine, Silver Blade Magazine, Urbanite Magazine, and others. She’s a Writer in Residence at Renaissance House Writer’s Retreat in Martha’s Vineyard and has been featured in arts stories in the Asbury Park Press, Martha’s Vineyard Gazette, Baltimore’s WJZ-TV and WYPR Maryland Public Radio.
Matthew Burns teaches and writes in upstate New York. His poems have won a James Hearst Poetry Prize from North American Review, received multiple Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominations, and have appeared or are forthcoming in RHINO, Posit, ellipsis…, Raleigh Review, Camas, Spoon River, Quiddity, and others.
Dan Wilcox is the host of the Third Thursday Poetry Night at the Social Justice Center in Albany, N.Y. and is a member of the poetry performance group “3 Guys from Albany”. As a photographer, he claims to have the world’s largest collection of photos of unknown poets. He has been a featured reader at all the important poetry venues in the Capital District & throughout the Hudson Valley. His poems have been published widely, most recently in the anthology Ghost Fishing: An Eco-Justice Poetry Anthology.
Nancy Klepsch is a poet and teacher who was born in Brooklyn, NY, and currently lives in Upstate NY where she co-hosts the 2nd Sunday @ 2 open mic for poetry and prose and is one of the founders of Riverside Community Press. She has been published in many online and print publications and has exhibited or curated public poetry installations having received grant awards from Breathing Lights, the New York State Council on the Arts, the City of Troy, and the Albany International Airport. God must be a boogie man is her first published book of poems.
Kendall Hoeft graduated from the University of Tampa’s Creative Writing M.F.A. program and currently teaches writing online for Florida International University. Her recent poetry can be viewed in Bad Pony Magazine, Patient Sounds, Occulum, Anti-Heroin Chic, Leveler, Zin Daily, Z Publishing House’s “Best Emerging Poets” and Driftwood Press. She facilitates “Poetry in Movement” classes at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy.
Carol H. Jewell is a musician, teacher, librarian, and poet living in Upstate New York with her wife and seven cats. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from The College of Saint Rose in 2016.
Eli Sands is a landscape architect at the firm Wagner Hodgson Landscape Architecture. Before changing careers and moving to the Capital Region Eli spent 10 years in NYC producing events, fashion shows, and off-off-Broadway theatre. Currently, Eli is a founding member and executive board member of CapSci. On the side, Eli pursues various artistic endeavors including playwriting, directing, photography, and digital design.
CapSci is a non-profit organization that aims to advance the public understanding of science in the New York Capital Region. Our mission is to promote interactions between scientists and non-scientists, to foster science-based public policy and scientifically literate policymakers, and to nurture diversity within the scientific community.
