Speak Up, Speak Out, Speak your Truth: An Introduction to Performance Poetry

Elizabeth K. Gordon at Enchanté Whole Leaf Teas

Slam was founded in Chicago in the late 1980’s and popularized by Boston poet Patricia Smith. It has since spread globally, with slam communities in most large cities and annual events that bring hundreds of poets together to perform rousing, relevant poetry before enthusiastic audiences.

In this workshop, we will create performance poems out of our lives and concerns, using models of excellent poems and learning time-tested literary techniques that bring force and musicality. Learn new ways to generate, structure, expand and “bring the noise” with your performance. Writers at all levels welcome as well as non-writers who would like to explore new ways to tell their stories and connect with the larger issues of our day.

The course ends with a public open mic & slam with Guest Feature

Cost: $40. Barter welcome.
Time: Four Wednesdays – 4:30-6:30 PM – 3/14 – 4/11
Slam night: Wed 4/11 – 7-9 PM.
Place: The Kingston Art Collective – 63 Broadway
