The 4th annual Janine Pommy Vega Poetry Festival will take place outside on Saturday evening July 19th at the Shivastan Poetry Ashram: Book Shop, Art Gallery, Imports & Antiquities in beautiful Woodstock.
Janine Pommy Vega (1942-2010) was an American poet associated with the Beats, freedom & human rights. She grew up in Union City, New Jersey & at the age of 16, inspired by Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, she travelled to Manhattan to become involved in the poetry scene there. She was also the 1st woman published in the City Lights Pocket Poets series with her book Poems to Fernando. Later in life, she was very involved in teaching poetry at local schools & prisons. She performed in many international poetry festivals around the world.

Festivities will include poetry, music, bonfire, refreshments, and poet’s mingling in the beautiful Shivastan Poetry Ashram Garden. Seating is limited, please bring a blanket & dress for outdoors. Admission is by donation.
This year’s event is hosted by by Andy Clausen, Pamela Twining, and Shiv Mirabito and will feature poetry from Bob Holman, Sophie Malleret, Bonny Finberg, Sparrow, and Violet Snow. This tribute will also have music by Cosmic Legends and will include a film of Vega reading her poems Across the Table.
The Shivastan Poetry Ashram is a bookshop, art gallery, and grassroots co-operative promoting poetry, friendship, wisdom & compassion for all beings located in central Woodstock, NY.
