The Northeast Poetry Center’s College of Poetry will have a big day on Saturday, December 7, starting at 1:00 pm with a workshop conducted by Gary Whitehead followed by the Poetry on the Loose reading featuring Susanna Rich.
Gary J. Whitehead will offer a poetic craft class focusing on the use of three rhetorical devices on Saturday, December 7, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Seligmann Center for the Arts, 23 White Oak Drive (across from the SLPAC, formerly the Lycian), Sugar Loaf, New York. The program is free and open to all. No preregistration is required.
Whitehead will describe the figures (asyndeton, polysyndeton, and anaphora) which writers may well have used without knowing their classical names. Participants will then examine examples from poetry and speeches and finally compose a new poem practicing the conscious use of the devices. Frequent use of figures of speech and thought has always characterized poetry. All writers are familiar with such figures as similes and alliteration. Whitehead characterizes the three he will spotlight as “syntactic,” that is, operating on the level of the sentence.
His program is the last of a series of free open workshops to be offered by the Northeast Poetry Center’s College of Poetry on the first Saturday of every month of 2013.
Gary Joseph Whitehead is the author of three books of poetry: A Glossary of Chickens, Measuring Cubits while the Thunder Claps, and The Velocity of Dust. He has also authored three chapbooks of poetry: After the Drowning (Finishing Line Press), A Cool, Dry Place (White Eagle Coffee Store Press), and Walking Back to Providence (Sow’s Ear Press). His work has appeared in journals, magazines and newspapers and most notably in The New Yorker and Poetry.
His awards include a New York Foundation for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in Poetry, two Galway Kinnell Poetry Prizes, a Pearl Hogrefe Fellowship at Iowa State University, and a Princeton University Distinguished Secondary School Teaching Award in 2003. He has held artist residencies at Blue Mountain Center, Mesa Refuge, and the Heinrich Böll cottage in Ireland. In 2004, he was the recipient of the PEN Northwest Margery Davis Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency Award, and spent April though October, 2005 in a secluded cabin in the woods of southwestern Oregon.
Following the workshop, Poetry on the Loose, celebrating twenty years of readings, will present Susanna Rich at 3:30 in the same space followed by an open reading.
Poet and songwriter, Susanna Rich is an Emmy Award nominee for her baseball poetry, a Fulbright Fellow in creative writing, and winner of the 2013 Ekphrasis Prize for “Shoes Along the Danube Promenade.” As founding producer and principal performer of Wild Nights Productions, LLC, Susanna tours her one-woman, audience interactive poetry happenings: ashes, ashes: A Poet Responds to the Holocaust; A Wild Night with Emily Dickinson, and Shakespeare’s *itches: A Musical. She is author of Television Daddy, The Drive Home, and The Flexible Writer.
