Sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by building on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form. Launched in high schools nationwide in the spring of 2006 with tens of thousands of students participating, POL has grown every year with over 365,000 students competing in 2011-2012.
The POL site includes an online anthology of hundreds of poems, as well as lesson plans and a teacher’s guide that address specific NCTE English Teaching Standards. Through Poetry Out Loud, high school students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
This year the New York State Poetry Out Loud competitions are run by the New York Library Association. For information, go to their website.
