One of the great poets in the area, Rebecca Schumejda, has a brand new book, Cadillac Men, that is being published by NYQ Books and released very, very soon. To celebrate the launch of the new book, Rebecca is bringing together three other wonderful poets for a reading at Half Moon Books in Kingston.
NYQ Books™ is proud to announce the release of Cadillac Men by Rebecca Schumejda. In her second full-length collection, Cadillac Men, Schumejda explores the pool hall subculture before the economic downturn in 2008, when the narrator and her husband took a calculated risk and purchased a pool hall in downtown Kingston, New York. During their arduous planning, they did not consider that their business and livelihood would depend on men who threw pebbles in church collection plates, shot up in the bathroom, and had nicknames like Bobby Balls-in-Hand, The Butcher, and Mikey Meatballs. Cadillac Men is a fractured poetic memoir about the year the narrator’s husband chased his lifelong dream by starting Crazy Eights, and the recessions that occurred as her family, the economy, her health and The Cadillac Men all took downward spirals.
Rebecca is one of the driving forces keeping poetry flourishing in the Kingston area. She has hosted many readings featuring some of the finest writers and performers in the country. To celebrate the release of Cadillac Men, Rebecca is going to have a special reading at Half Moon Books (35 North Front Street, Kingston, NY) on Saturday, November 10 from 4:00PM – 6:00PM. Joining Rebecca at this reading will be John Dorsey, Nathan Graziano, and Cheryl Rice.
John Dorsey currently resides in Toledo, Ohio. He is the author of several collections of poetry, including Harvey Keitel, Harvey Keitel, Harvey Keitel, with S.A. Griffin and Scott Wannberg, (Butcher Shop Press/Rose of Sharon Press/Temple of Man, 2005), Teaching the Dead to Sing: The Outlaw’s Prayer (Rose of Sharon Press, 2006), Sodomy is a City in New Jersey (American Mettle Books, 2010), Leaves of Ass (Unadorned Press, 2011), The Death of Language (Bottle of Smoke Press, 2011), Street Maps For Lost Souls (Crisis Chronicles Press, 2012), and White Girl Problems (NightBallet Press, 2012). Nathan Graziano lives in Manchester, New Hampshire. He is the author of three collections of poetry—Not So Profound (Green Bean Press, 2003), Teaching Metaphors (sunnyoutside Press, 2007) and After the Honeymoon (sunnyoutside Press, 2009)—a collection of short stories, Frostbite (GBP, 2002), and several chapbooks of fiction and poetry. He has an MFA in fiction writing from The University of New Hampshire and teaches high school. A chapbook of short prose pieces titled Hangover Breakfasts will be published by Bottle of Smoke Press this fall.
Cheryl A. Rice has spent the better part of three decades becoming and being in the heart of New York’s Hudson Valley, first as a college student, then as a bookseller, customer service rep, and now a freelance writer. She has had poems published in Baltimore Review, Chronogram and Home Planet News, among others, and has read on TV, radio and in person throughout the Northeast. Rice is the founder and host of the now defunct Sylvia Plath Bake-Off, and has offered her RANDOM WRITING workshops to both young and adult poets of all ages. She currently lives in Kingston, NY with her partner and handler Michael J. McCabe.
Rebecca Schumejda is the author of Cadillac Men just released from New York Quarterly Press; Falling Forward, a full-length collection of poems (sunnyoutside, 2009); From Seed to Sin (Bottle of Smoke Press, 2011), The Map of Our Garden (verve bath, 2009); Dream Big, Work Harder (sunnyoutside press, 2006); The Tear Duct of the Storm(Green Bean Press, 2001); and the poem “Logic” on a postcard (sunnyoutside). She received her MA in Poetics and Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and her BA in English and Creative Writing from SUNY New Paltz. She lives in New York’s Hudson Valley with her husband and daughter.
