There area only a couple of times a year when there are five Tuesdays in a month. Our friends at the WordXWord Festival in Pittsfield does something special those times with their new Head-To-Head Haiku series. At the first such event in May, Team Nitty Gritty’s very own Elizag came out on top.
Here is the information for what is on tap for the July 31st event at yBar in Pittsfield and how you can get involved.
Poets – aka Haikusters – come armed with a boat load of Haiku. In this case, Haiku is defined simply as a poem having a maximum of 17 syllables. No titles, no props.
3 judges selected from the audience, are equipped with red and non-red flags.
Haikusters are matched up in pairs for head-to-head competition. Unlike a conventional slam, in H-T-H you have a direct competitor in every round. With multiple haiku per round, on-the-fly strategy, paring and counter paring and thinking on your feet all come into play!
WXW hosted it’s first Head-To-Head Haiku May 29 with Albany’s Elizag coming out on top in the “death match” final round against Pittsfield’s Gabriel Squailia.
