Tomorrow night the 2011-2012 season of Frequency North kicks off at The College of St. Rose with Dana Spiotta and Tobias Seamon. Host and organizer Daniel Nester has put together a great season of writers coming to Albany this year to share their work with the community and students.

ACCLAIMED NOVELIST DANA SPIOTTA AND ALBANY NATIVE TOBIAS SEAMON TO READ FOR “FREQUENCY NORTH” WRITERS SERIES AT SAINT ROSE
The 2011-12 “Frequency North” visiting writers reading series at The College of Saint Rose kicks off Thursday, October 27, with critically acclaimed novelist Dana Spiotta and Albany native Tobias Seamon.
Spiotta and Seamon will read at 7:30 p.m. in the Saint Joseph Hall Auditorium, 985 Madison Ave., Albany. The program is free and open to the public. Copies of the authors’ latest works will be available for purchase and signing.
Dana Spiotta’s (www.danaspiotta.com) third novel, Stone Arabia (Scribner), was published this past July. Ron Charles of The Washington Post calls the book “fascinating” and writes that “her reflections on the precarious nature of modern life are witty until they’re really unsettling.” Her second novel, Eat the Document (Scribner, 2006), was a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award and a recipient of the Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Michiko Kakutani in The New York Times called it “stunning” and described it as “a book that possesses the staccato ferocity of a Joan Didion essay and the razzle-dazzle language and the historical resonance of a Don DeLillo novel.” Spiotta’s debut novel, Lightning Field (2001), was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the West.
Tobias Seamon’s (www.tobiasseamon.com) latest fiction collection, The Emperor’s Toy Chest (PS Publishing, 2011), explores history, mythology, fantasy and the magical borderlands in-between. Booklist described his earlier novel, The Magician’s Study (Turtle Point Press, 2011), as having “stylistic inventiveness and skill with memorable characterizations [that] are nothing short of breathtaking.” The author of a poetry chapbook, Loosestrife Along the River Styx (Foothills Publishing), Seamon also wrote and directed the short mockumentary “Amerikan Partizan,” which premiered at the 2007 EdWood Filmfest. A contributing writer with the online magazine The Morning News, Seamon lives in Albany.
“Frequency North” is the brainchild of Daniel Nester, an assistant professor of English at Saint Rose. In creating the series in 2006, he purposely designed it to be “aggressively eclectic.” In addition to teaching, Nester is the author of How to Be Inappropriate (Soft Skull Press, 2009), God Save My Queen (2003) and God Save My Queen II (2004).
