2018 Albany Word Fest

So much going on in the local poetry and spoken word community – including the 2018 Albany Word Fest! Here is a look at all of the poetry events, readings, slams, and workshops coming up this week in the region.

 

Sunday, April 15

11:00am – Poetry for the rest of us: Celebratory Brunch for National Poetry Month
Eden Cafe, 269 Osborne Road, Loudenville, NY
Carol Durant and Friends will be reciting both original and popular works to celebrate National Poetry Month.

 

Monday, April 16

7:00pm – Word Fest Night of Features
Hudson River Coffee House, 227 Quail Street, Albany, NY
The 2018 Albany Word Fest kicks off with an evening of poetry and prose featuring regional poets and writers Harvey HavelDanielle PouliotAdam TedescoJoe KrausmanPoetyc Visionz, and Olivia McKee, hosted by Brian Dorn.

7:00pm – Poetic Vibe
Troy Kitchen, 77 Congress Street, Troy, NY
Poetic Vibe is a weekly Poetry Open Mic with featured local and regional poets hosted by D. Colin in downtown Troy.

7:30pm – Front Parlor
The Olde English Pub, 25 Quackenbush Square, Albany, NY
A storytelling night at The Olde English Pub with a different theme each month hosted by Gregor Wynnyczuk.

 

Tuesday, April 17

6:30pm – Colonie Tuesday Night Live Poets’ Corner
William K. Sanford Town Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road, Loudonville, NY
Local poets and writers of all ages are invited to present six to ten minutes of their original work at this open reading forum. The public is encouraged to stop in and listen.

7:00pm – Club Helsinki Open Mic
Club Helsinki, 405 Columbia Street, Hudson, NY
A weekly open mic for music, performance, and poetry on the incredible Club Helsinki stage.

7:00pm – Emack and Bolio’s Open Mic Night
Emack & Bolio’s, Delaware Ave., Albany, NY
A weekly open mic for music and poetry.

7:00pm – Nitty Gritty Slam
The Low Beat, 335 Central Ave., Albany, NY
Nitty Gritty Slam continues with a poetry slam and open mic for spoken word at The Low Beat. Admission is $3.00 before 7:30 / $5.00 after.

8:00pm – Northampton Poetry Slam and Open Mic
World War II Club, 50 Conz St., Northampton, MA
Northampton’s only weekly open mic poetry night offers some of the best, most creative voices in the county. Every Tuesday night at 8:00pm.

 

Wednesday, April 18

7:00pm – Albany Poets Presents D. Colin
Restaurant Navona, 289 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY
We welcome a local poet, writer, artist, and performer D. Colin to Albany Poets Presents at Restaurant Navona to share her work and then take questions from the audience about life, inspirations, writing, and more.

7:00pm – What is Poetry?
Psychedelicatessen, 275 River Street, Troy, NY
A new, very relaxed spoken word open mic in downtown Troy hosted by Avery Stempel.

7:30pm – Next Year’s Words
Jewish Congregation of New Paltz Community Center, 30 North Chestnut St., Rt. 32, New Paltz , NY
Next Year’s Words, the literary reading series in New Paltz, salutes National Poetry Month with readings from special guest Marc Harshman, the Poet Laureate of West Virginia; Azish Filabi, a memoirist who recounts her transition from Iranian to Iranian-American in blasts of insight; Susan Chute, the poet, founder and emcee of Next Year’s Words; and Tim Brennan, a poet, woodworker and Hudson Valley resident for almost thirty years.

 

Thursday, April 19

7:00pm – Third Thursday Poetry Night
Social Justice Center, 33 Central Ave., Albany, NY
W.D. Clarke will be the featured reader at the Third Thursday Poetry Night at the Social Justice Center on Central Avenue. There will be an opportunity before and after the feature for poets to step up to the mic and share their work.

7:00pm – Rockhill Bakehouse Open Mic
Rockhill Bakehouse Cafe, 19 Exchange Street, Glens Falls, NY
Weekly open mic for musicians and writers.

7:30pm – Utica Poets Society Spoken Word Open Mic
Tramontane Cafe, 1105 Lincoln Ave, Utica, NY
Weekly open mic for poetry and spoken word with a non-mandatory theme.

8:00pm – Voice Less Readings
Green Kill Gallery, 229 Greenkill Avenue, Kingston, NY
Voice Less is a weekly reading series hosted by Noah David Roberts focused on giving those who feel like their art is not heard a place where they can share, listen, and become inspired.

8:00pm – Starving Artist Thursdays
Hudson River Coffee House, 227 Quail Street, Albany, NY
A weekly open mic for music, poetry, and spoken word at one of Albany’s best coffee shops.

 

Friday, April 20

7:00pm – Readings Against the End of the World
Husted Hall Café, UAlbany Downtown Campus, 135 Western Avenue, Albany
Albany Poets and the English Department at UAlbany present Readings Against the End of the World, a 24-Hour Open Mic for poetry, storytelling, theater, spoken word, and more to benefit the South End Children’s Café. Online sign-up is now open!

8:00pm – Hudson Valley Writers’ Center Open Mic Night
Hudson Valley Writers’ Center, 300 Riverside Drive, Sleepy Hollow, NY
Featured Poets + open mike for poets, fiction writers, essayists with rotating hosts. Located in the restored Philipse Manor railroad station, which is approx. 30 miles north of midtown Manhattan and 2.6 miles north of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

 

Saturday, April 21

7:00pm – Mudd Poets Poetry Series 
Mudd Puddle Cafe, 10 Main Street, New Paltz, NY
Monthly poetry open mic series with featured reader Gloria Winter hosted by Robert Milby.
