WXW presents voices against greed, January 29 in North Adams

WordXWord welcomes the new year with an opportunity for poets and audience to celebrate sharing and caring, and/or reflect on the consequences of greed, Sunday, January 29 at 3 p.m. at the Gallery 51, 51 Main Street, North Adams, MA. Admission is free.

Nine days following the presidential inauguration, poets and spoken word artists will bear witness to a world where greed appears to have no limits, and yet, every day holds moments of generosity and compassion.

Doni Smith (MCLA, 2019) will host this event which will be set in the context of visual artist Josh Ostraff‘s (visiting assistant professor, MCLA) exhibition – OFA ATU.

The audience is advised that this program may contain explicit content.

Poets interested in performing their work can sign up online on a first come basis, with the caveat that their work addresses/reflects on the theme in some way. More information for poets is online at wXw365.org.

From the artist’s statement:

“… Hiko one night had a dream and visit from the youngest son of the first Tui Tonga. He taught him how to call the ‘Atu (skipjack tuna) to him to feed his people. There were rules they would need to follow and if broken then he would not be able to call the fish again until the people had changed their hearts. For 21 years Hiko was able to call to the ‘Atu and the people in his village followed the rules. Then one day Hiko went out and called the fish, people took more than they needed and sold them, they broke the rules, and I was there. As a result Hiko said it would be a long time before he could call the fish again.”
