Albany Poets 2014 Annual Meeting

Albany Public Library Pine Hills Branch

Have you ever wanted to work with Albany Poets to help put on poetry and spoken word events in the area? Do you have an idea for an event, publication, open mic, blog? Do you want to help build and sustain one of the biggest and diverse literary communities in the country? If so, we want to see you at our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 14 at the Pine Hills Branch of the Albany Public Library, 517 Western Avenue, at 6 p.m.

Like we say on the volunteer page of the website, “Albany Poets is an all volunteer army. We do not get paid for what we do, we do it for the love of the art.”

We have worked hard over the past 14 years to make Albany Poets what it is today. We started in 2000 as a simple website to let people in the area know when and where poetry open mics were taking place. We featured a handful of poets and hosted the School of Night open mic / reading series at Valentine’s. Since then we have grown to now hosting multiple monthly events and open mics, the Nitty Gritty Slam, the annual Albany Word Fest, and all the while expanding the website to include news and information on poets, artists, events, open mics, and slams from the lower Hudson Valley all the way to the Adirondacks and out to Western Massachusetts.

And as we continue to grow and expand our reach we are adding more projects to our list. And now we are looking for more people to join us and get involved in what we do. We are looking for new board members, volunteers, and committee members.

If you are interested in helping out and being part of the team now is your chance. We will be holding the Albany Poets Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 14 at 6 p.m. We will be discussing the past and future of the organization. We will specifically be talking about our upcoming 501c3 filing and our goals for finally becoming an official not-for-profit organization. Other topics and issues include our plans for Poets Speak Loud, Nitty Gritty Slam, the Albany Word Fest, our new event series at The Linda, Up The River, and our after school program, Page to Stage.

If you would like to join us, send an email to albanypoets@gmail.com and introduce yourself. We can’t wait to see everyone at the meeting to help take Albany Poets and the local poetry and spoken word community to the next level.
